Chinese is not picture writing, watch the video here, Source: (NativLang, 2015). Using the ancient Chinese characters to show how they have developed into the Chinese characters we use today. Through combining characters we create meaning called logographs. The tones are clear in the characters through sound writing called rebus. The video explains that these come together to form helpful links which help to uncover the meaning of a pronunciation character called determinatives. “In Hanzi (Chinese) and Kanji (Japanese) they’re called radicals, simply because they narrow down the root meaning (the “radix”) of the written character” (NativLang, 2015).
